What is Long-Term Care Insurance?

Long-term care insurance is a specialized insurance designed to cover the costs associated with nursing homes, assisted living, home health care, and other long-term care services. These services are usually not covered by traditional health insurance or Medicare, making long-term care insurance a critical consideration for those planning for their future health care needs.

Comprehensive Coverage

Most long-term care insurance policies sold today are comprehensive, covering a wide range of care settings and services:

  • In-Home Care: This includes skilled nursing care, occupational, speech, physical, and rehabilitation therapy, as well as help with personal care tasks such as bathing and dressing. Many policies also cover homemaker services like meal preparation and housekeeping.

  • Adult Day Health Care Centers: These facilities provide social and health-related services during the day for adults who need supervision.

  • Hospice Care: Specialized care focused on providing comfort and support for those in the final phase of a terminal illness.

  • Respite Care: Temporary relief for primary caregivers by providing professional care for the loved one.

  • Assisted Living Facilities: Residential care facilities that offer housing, personal care, and health services.

  • Alzheimer's Special Care Facilities: Facilities specifically designed to care for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

  • Nursing Homes: Institutions that provide 24-hour nursing care for those who need significant medical attention and assistance with daily activities.

What Isn't Covered by Long-Term Care Insurance

Like all insurance policies, long-term care insurance has exclusions. These exclusions often adhere to state regulations and can vary from one policy to another. Common exclusions include:

  • Care Provided by a Family Member: Policies typically do not cover care given by family members.

  • Care Provided Outside the USA: Most policies exclude international care, though some offer international care benefits.

  • War-Related Injuries: Care resulting from war or acts of war.

  • Self-Inflicted Injuries: Care resulting from suicide attempts or intentionally self-inflicted injuries.

  • Substance Abuse Treatment: Treatment for alcoholism or drug addiction.

  • Government Facilities: Care provided in government facilities is usually excluded.

  • Services Covered by Other Programs: Services already covered by Medicare, other government programs (except Medicaid), or workers' compensation are not covered.

To understand the specific exclusions of a policy, review the Outline of Coverage provided before applying. This document will detail what is and isn’t covered under the policy.
